Macro Invertebrate Day
We had a nice first meeting this morning at the Bronx Zoo. Some information from the meeting is as follows:
1) On March 31st, Leaf packs will be available for the teachers that request them. They can be picked up at the Southern Blvd. entrance to the zoo.
2) The actual day will be May 19. On that day ther will be 6 to 7 stations for the students to visit. In the Flaugherty room there will be 3: Invertebrate search, Food Web and a Green careers panel/presentation. At the Mitsubishi RiverWalk, there will be 4: 2 by the Alliance; Kick nets and water testing, and two others, possible riverwalk talk and Macro invertebrate Mayhem.
3) There will be a set lunch/rest time for all.
4)The placement of some leaf packs still will be discussed. Namely, in the zoo and Botanical gardens. We are working on permission.
5) Actual participants are still being nailed down.
Thank you to the zoo for the space, Ms. Manas for her support and BW for his tireless efforts.

Today, BW, AM and DG placed 16 leaf packs, assembled by Rocking the Boat volunteers, into the Bronx River just south of the Bronx Zoo Dam. The leaf packs will hopefully become the temporary homes for various Macroinvertebrates.
BW chose a variety of placements that, hopefully, mimic the natural stream bed. We are still looking for a couple more possible placements. This batch will be removed for the March 31 distribution.
Thanks again To Ms. Manas for her support in getting us down to the river, and the rest of the zoo staff for being so cordial.
Look for the pictures under River Pics.

Thank you ALL for meeting this past Wednesday. Special thanks to the Bronx Zoo for allowing us to hold the meeting in their staff dinning room and providing food and beverages! Below I have tried my best to summarize what was discussed at the meeting.
Please make any additions and/or corrections.
*Bob please let us know the next time and location of our next meeting.*
Question: Should we type up a formal invite for those individuals we are trying to recruit for The Green Careers Panel? If so I would be willing to put something together. Let me know if you think it is necessary.
- Bob :
- Bob will be working on placing leaf packs. Waiting to get permission from the Bronx Zoo and Clearpool.
- Bob will also be working to recruit participants from last years Macro Day. When he receives this information he will pass it along to Angie.
- If he does not hear from last years participant by the deadline (?) then he will proceed to invite new schools, trying to recruit from schools associated with Rocking the Boat and The Bronx River Alliances.
- Chrissy :
- Will be in communication with Clearpool for the puposes of placing leaf packs and to invite their educators to run the food wed activity at Macro Day.
- Chrissy will be trying to find one or two people who would be interested in participating in the green careers panel.
- Rocking the Boat students and Chrissy will be running the macroinvertebrate lead pack dissection demonstrations on May 19th.
- Chrissy will be updating last years Macro flier for this year.
- Damian :
- Will be searching for one or two people who would be willing to particate in the green careers panel.
- Damian will be trying to staff the water quality station and kick net sampling station for May 19th.
- Damian will be trying to find last years Macro Day flier and getting that to Chrissy.
- Alysha :
- Will be seeing if Bob can get permission to place leaf packs in the Zoo.
- Alysha will also be seeing if she can find one of two people who would be interested in participating on the green careers panel.
- Angie :
- Will be waiting to get names from Bob of the teachers that are interested in participating. Angie will then contact those teachers and get more information from them.
- Angie will be working with Betsy from the NYSDEC and Melani to coordinate the macroinvertebrate mayhem station and the SCA tour leaders.
